We’re Taking a Look Back at SquareHook Over 2014

2014 has been our best year yet, here at SquareHook!  As we have grown and expanded, so has our reputation and product offering.

We have been working away, you may say comparable to Santa’s Workshop elves.  We have been GOING!  We have added tons of incredible features to the tool this year.  We can’t even believe how much we’ve improved the SquareHook CMS in just one year.

We wanted to share with you some of our product highlights, and features that have grown and expanded over this year!

eCommerce

Our team has been hard at work testing, developing, and testing some more to get our eCommerce piece out there to the masses this year. We’ve seen many incredible SquareHook stores’ traffic explode as shoppers flock to their online stores already.  What does the creation of our new eCommerce mean to you, our SquareHook clients?

  • You can easily add an unlimited number of products with different variations, depending on what you’re store is offering.
  • Our website builder has it all—do it yourself capabilities, along with the eCommerce functionality.
  • Your site visitors have an even easier shopping experience-both on desktop, and more importantly, on mobile!
  • You will save money on payment processing, by avoiding some expensive processing companies out there.  We have a number of different payment processing options for you to choose from!

HELP Book and New HELP Videos

As we are constantly updating our feature list on our website, we have a lot of new secrets to making your site the best it can be!

Our team has put together an all inclusive help book to assist you in your website creation journey.  In it, you can learn everything there is to know about adding images, content, hyperlinks, duplicating pages, adding videos, embedding or creating a blog from scratch!  It is a great supplemental tool to assist anyone when they may be stuck.

And, as always, our help website is here as a supplemental tool for you as well.    We’ve also had to remake our How-To videos to make it easier for our clients to follow along while they build their website.

Intranet

We just recently built this into our tool, for larger businesses that really need it for their company and employees. With our Intranet, you can customize a page, as to whether or not a certain role can access it or not. You can assign users (employees for example) to a role, like HR, Admin, or Employee.

What’s different from using SquareHook for an Intranet vs using a home grown internet?  Our tool is ready to go.  You can create your companies intranet and be up and running now.  You can control access and build your intranet with all the power of a content management system.  You can also customize and adjust information, charts, table and communication without a programmer.

In addition to an company intranet, you can have a customer intranet.  With our e-commerce engine you can even create a unique shopping experience for customers.  You can provide a platform for discounts easily.

SEO

Earlier this year we added SEO customization under Page Settings in the Editor.  Clients can easily add Focus Keywords, SEO Titles, and meta descriptions for EVERY page within your website.  We added a new Alt Tag functionality you can add to your images….all of it improve your SEO search!  You’re welcome.

We wish you all a very Happy New Year!  We are excited to see what 2015 has in store!!

Does Your Website Have Intranet?

Everyone has access to the Internet, right?  But what about Intranet?  Wait….there’s a difference?  We can all agree that the names should have been slightly different, as to not confuse the masses, but what are you gonna do?

Let’s explain first, what an Intranet is.  It is a network belonging specifically to an organization or company, that is only accessible by it’s internal employees, members, or other administration.  It can look just like any ol’ website, but it has a security surrounding it, protecting others from accessing it.  So let’s say, your company has a website, but there is a special area you can log into, where you can access your pay stubs, company policies, etc–that is an INTRANET.

Intranets are great because you’re able to share information amongst a certain group (like a company).  Oh, and it is more secure. That’s always nice.

We just recently built this into our tool, for larger businesses that really need it for their company and employees.

Finding the Perfect Theme For YOUR WEBSITE

We’ve been doing a bit of website inventory as of late, and took notice how versatile our themes truly are!

Here are 4 VERY DIFFERENT websites, all selling/promoting/advertising/showcasing something completely unique.  But they have one thing in common: they used the SAME THEME as their base!

All of these sites had different motives, a different user experience, and a special look-all their own.  We certainly find ourselves bragging that any one of our themes could work for you.  We have even taken the time to make recommendations on templates, depending on what your website represents, or a look you may be going for.

We let you know what a template is capable of, so you can get a better idea of what would work perfect for your website!  We also tagged each theme with a search functionality, so if you can’t quite decide what you’re going for-that may help narrow it down for you. 🙂

If you have a certain template you like, but can’t quite envision what it could turn into, contact us.  We’d be more than happy to help you get a better idea about what your site could transform into.

Google Is Getting Your Back, Or At Least Your Mobile Website Search

image

We don’t know about you, but there are times we are Googling something on our smartphones, and once we click on where we’re supposed to be going it will kick you directly back to the homepage on that site.  BUT WHY?!?!

Pretty regularly it’s because the site you’re searching on is redirecting you to their “mobile-friendly” version.  Their site isn’t actually responsive and adapting. The server recognizes you are on a smarphone and is grabbing the mobile theme’s homepage.   Way annoying, right?  We thought so too.

Poor Google can’t help it-it’s the website’s fault it’s not all responsive and gorgeous.  But Google peeps are trying to help clue you in by taking a couple steps:

1.  Google will send you a message letting you know of a site (or page) issue that may be happening on mobile-that is, if you happen to use Google Webmasters Tools on your domain.

2.  When Google finds you’re using a phone and searching on a site that has a lousy mobile redirect, it will warn you.  You will have to click on a “continue through anyways” button to visit the awkward site.

Neither of these are instant remedies to a frustrating issue, but let’s face it-it’s not Google’s problem that any site has a less than savory mobile site.  People may think that mobile websites are out of their price range, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  There are so many mobile solutions out there, that focus on responsive design and making sure your site looks great on all devices.  This will save your site visitors from dealing with the frustrating Google assistance they’ll need to get them to where you want them-YOUR SITE!

If you can tell the difference between a mobile site and a site on a mobile device, then you should educate those lowsy pinch and zoom site owners that they should get with the 21st century and get that site responsive!  Or you could put them in contact with us!  We are constantly upgrading our customers websites into a responsive mobile friendly format using responsive design thanks to twitter bootstrap.

Web Design Wednesday Website Spotlight-Audio-Grenade

Hey one and all!  At SquareHook we have been pretty busy as of late, getting our E-commerce up and rolled out, and building beautiful website for clients.

We started a website promotion back in the fall, and we have had some really great reception with it, and have decided to extend it!  With the promotion, we are building out client’s websites for FREE with a hosting subscription.  Clients can customize any one of our dozens of themes, integrate social media, make it completely mobile friendly, and organize their content simply and easily!

We’d like to spotlight one of our promotional websites every week, so you all can get a glance at what our awesome themes are capable of!

Website Today: Audio Grenade

Our client Chris, came to us hoping to get his vibration speakers out to the masses.  He wanted something appealing to those who enjoy music, but also something clean and professional…enter the ‘Tech Two’ theme.

Chris wanted his website to match his logo, and also have that mechanical-feel to match the vibration speakers.   He of course, wanted to incorporate a video, to demonstrate what the Audio Grenade can do.  We added a rotating carousel to show how versatile the use of speaker was.  And we incorporated a blogging feature so he could let people know of the latest and greatest news!

Both he and SquareHook were very pleased with the way this site turned out!

What is Responsive Design?

People often ask us what Responsive design is.  Wikipedia tells us it is “…a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).”

image

So what the heck does that mean and how does that impact my website and my customers?  Simply put, a website built with responsive design is a positive experience for those users viewing your website from any device including tablets and smart phones.  Worldwide, 50% or more of queries on Google are now happening from mobile devices.

Recently we had a customer say to us, “So what?  I don’t need to worry about mobile.”  Instead of arguing the point, we let data drive the conversation.  A quick analysis of their site showed that 61.24% of their users were coming from mobile devices.  The point was well taken!  Dismissing the need for a mobile-friendly website would be like ignoring half of the people visiting their site.  Can you imagine walking into a brick and mortar store and watching the staff acknowledge and help half of the patrons and completely ignoring the rest?

What steps can you take to make your website using responsive design:

1. Think about the mobile first.  What will your site look like to your users?  What is the most important content to display and how will the graphic design of your site look like to those individuals.

2. Design your site with a grid structure in mind.  By organizing the content of your site into a grid, it makes it a lot easier to rearrange and adjust your content to fit all of the possible devices easily.

3. Use the proper tools to control the look and feel of the site otherwise known as the “theme” or “layout”.   New features in CSS3 allow for a lot of the functionality that used to be done by manually manipulating images.   This helps to intelligently retain the proper look and feel across all devices.

4. Think in percentages.  Part of mobile design is to no longer have a fixed width of 800px or 960px wide, you have to think in terms of percent of screen width.  Fill the space.

5. Ask your developer or web designer about responsive design.  If they don’t know what it is or how to implement a responsive design website, it’s time to look for a new designer.

We love responsive design and are constantly researching the latest techniques to maintain our expertise.  If you have more questions on creating mobile sites for your businesses or your customers, contact us.  SquareHook will be happy to give advice and show you how you can improve your appearance in the mobile sector.
